This is possible, but generally not advisable. Because the cost incurred will be huge and also, the resultant product will be incompetent. The noise levels are going to be high. If you are keen on getting a diesel car. Better get a new one.

I did know a person who replaced his 800's petrol engine with a tiny 3-cyl diesel engine a few years back. In the past, several Ambassadors were converted to diesel from petrol by replacing the regular ones with used BMC engines. But this was possible because there was enough space and size in the engine housing to contain a bigger engine. However, first of all you should know that nowadays this is not a common thing to do and not many people have the expertise to does it right. Apart from this, there are several other things you need to consider as well. Some of these are, cost of replacement, price of the engine, loss of warranty, power of the engine, the engine that can actually fit such tiny space (diesel engines are usually heavier and are bigger in proportion to petrol engines to generate the same amount of BHP), and finally the engine should meet the emission norms. All things considered it is a costly and cumbersome process and will definitely create mechanical problems for the car in the long run.

    Hi,
Interested in exploring this further. I realise it could be huge cost but taking the same logic of having plenty of diesel engine vehicles opions compared to older era, would it not be possible to get more options in buying a diesel engine which can be used as replacement to petrol engine? For example -
    1. Palio or Indica - petrol and diesel engine cars have the same body and engine space. Of course, one may need to have better suspension fitted in, gear ratio change etc.
    2. Is it legal? Is there anyone who is aware of the process w.r.t insurance, RTO etc?
    3. Where does one procure a diesel engine? How does one go about it?
    4. While it makes sense to dispose off a petrol and buy a diesel, where should one seriously start to compare? Example if there is a potential additional investment of 2-3 lakhs to get a diesel car, and your lovable petrol car is in decent body shape and interiors, can one consider this option?
    5. Surely, there should be mech shops who are looking at excelling in this proposition as petrol prices are sky-rocketing.
    Thanks'
Owner of Petrol Indica , i enjoy my car, no complaints about anything but the mileage

    Hi,
You can try the following engines:
    1. Isuzu
    2. ford ikon engine.
    3. lancer diesel engine.

I am not sure of the mechanics in Delhi but do know that in meerut this can be done.
But the only problem is, " RTO will not give you the permission". But if you want you can check with RTO for the same.
