Thread: Gear stuck and clutch feels very hard

My Santro Xing 2005 has done around 60k kms now; it gives me about 11-12 kmpl with AC always on. However the car is in good condition, the gear sometimes struck n the clutch feels very hard while driving. When I took my car for service the service advisors told me that there is a need of engine oil substitute plus oil filter, engine flushing and also there is a need of engine decarburizing imagine that it is part of 50000 km service. i want to know is that my car really needs engine decarburizing and would carbon cleaning help me increase my mileage? If yes how much would it cost?

Clutch feels hard: Is it the pedal that's hard to press? Clutch spring could become hard due to prolonged non-use. If the clutch engages correctly then I guess it’s not a serious trouble.

Decarburizing: Is the oil turning black rather quickly, like within 2 months or 1000km? Is the exhaust smoky/dirty/black? If yes then decarburizing/flushing may be required. This will not necessarily cause upgrading in mileage, but the engine will run cleaner.

Inquire with an outside garage - show them the car and get a list of things to be done and their cost, then compare with what the ASC guys have said.

Decarb is not necessary unless there is blackening of oil and or smoke from wear out as conversant. I did 64 k services at ASC recently. I was clear to the ASC guys, do not flush or decarbonizes. Other stuff like oil, oil and air filter change, lubrication, and injector and throttle body clean etc was done. Coolant was changed and some oil seals, muffler joint, joint connecting oil to engine were changed-total cost Rs. 5800.

Regarding clutch being hard this should be looked at since you have crossed 50k kms. I did a clutch change at 45K kms on the odo since the clutch was very hard and had jerking. Probably a spring and cable change would have sufficed but the ASC changed plate and all except the flywheel which they said is fine. Cost about rs 4500 and now at 64k kms clutch is quite smooth and comfortable to drive. Try to check if the spring and cable alone can be changed.
